Splendour In The Grass – Byron Bay, Australia
Stepping onto the North Byron Parklands during Splendour in The Grass is like stepping into a magazine photo shoot. Featuring only the trendiest and most stylish hippie/gypsy people on the planet, Splendour in the Grass hails as the most stylish music festival I have ever attended. For three days, the best dressed Australians in the country boogie down to folk, indie, and EDM… all in the mud. Although this year was said to be the muddiest festival the campground has seen in years, the festival is no stranger to adverse weather. And even that wont stop the fashionistas. Gumboots never looked so good.
The festival, which is held in Australia’s wintertime, was one of my favorite festivals to attend worldwide. The festival was well organized, complete with a pre-party on Thursday, and was on a great piece of land in one of the most beautiful cities the country has to offer; Byron Bay.
By the time I had decided Splendour in The Grass was a festival I could attend with my schedule, tickets had sold out. During second sale, as my credit card numbers were being punched in, those tickets sold out too. I found that the only way to attend the festival was to go through Contiki. Contiki is a company that is dedicated to taking 18-35 year olds around the world. They pride themselves on being a premier company to take the young, fun, crowd around the world. This review will contain a lot of Contiki added bonuses since everything I did was through them. After having such an incredible time, I don’t think I would go to Splendour any other way (shoutout to the Contiki SITG2015 crew!).
How To Get There
Plane: Located in Byron Bay (the northeastern part of Australia), the most cost effective airport to fly into is Brisbane. From Brisbane, there are many coach buses that will take you straight into Byron.
Car: You can also drive if you purchase a car pass. Splendour also partnered with a few rideshare sites that connected drivers looking to head to the festival.
Bus: If you are already in the Byron area, there are several buses directly into the campgrounds for $10.
Train: No trains lead straight into North Byron Parklands, but you can get to two nearby towns from Sydney or Brisbane and take a bus the rest of the way.
Contiki: By going through Contiki, you have the option to fly into whatever airport works best for you. This includes Sydney, Brisbane or Byron. From there, they check you in, give you your tickets and you board the bus which will take you straight into the campgrounds and drop you off right by where you are camping. Pretty seamless.
Where to Stay
You have several options when choosing where and how to sleep at Splendour. You have the option to do regular camping, to rent an RV, to sleep in a hostel in Byron Bay town, or to do an upgraded camping package.
Upgraded Camping
Teepeelove Village – This village is located about 150m from the main entrance and is complete with private showers. The teepees are all prepitched, and can fit 2-4 people, depending on the package you choose.
Flash Camp – Run similarly to a hotel, Flash Camp is a super upgraded camping experience. Complete with a powder room (which has fresh towels, stylists and hairdryers), Flash Camp offers all the luxuries of hotel living, but in a camp setting, just steps from the festival entrance.
Camp Little Foot (Print) – In order to encourage a greener way to think and camp, Splendour incentivizes attendees by offering a campground in close proximity to the festival in exchange for a small carbon footprint. There are rules including how many people you need to carpool with and separating waste from recyclables.
You can also rent out tents and other camping equipment from a few different companies working with Splendour, or you can stay on other local campgrounds (who also offer rental equipment). You can also stay in local hostels or hotels in the Byron Bay town area (located about 30 minutes from the North Byron Parklands).
Contiki: This was probably my favorite part of being with the Contiki “tour”. Our camp was sectioned off by gates and Contiki signs, about 200 meters from the festival gate entrance. We had the most awesome 2 person tents that were all pre-pitched and had cots inside. The only thing we needed was our sleeping bags. The tents were so big that you could stand (and even jump a little bit) inside. The tents were well ventilated, had TONS of space and were a pleasure to sleep in. In addition to having our own little tent village of Contiki-ers, we also had our own communal shade structure, complete with multiple picnic tables, power outlets to charge phones, and inflatable couches. Talk about luxury camping!
Capacity
The capacity at Spendour is about 30,000. The great thing about this festival is that because there is so much to do on so many parts of the festival grounds, it did not ever feel over crowded. The only times it felt crowded was going to a main stage to see a headline act, trying to get into the Smirnoff bar or Captain Morgan ship when the music stopped at the stages, or if it was raining and you were at a covered stage.
Crowd
Australians have to be some of my favorite people in the world. They’re fun, goofy when they want to be, and well dressed when they want to be. As I mentioned before, the fashion at this festival was out of control. Golden skin, flash tattoos, silver jewelry, hats, and oversized sunglasses everywhere. It was a modern day Woodstock with a gypsy and hipster flare. Everywhere I turned there were people who just looked amazing. Be sure to check out my Splendour Fashion Gallery here! Costumes, glitter, and floral prints were everywhere. Just dress well and you’ll fit right in.
Food
The food at this festival was awesome. There was a wide variety, TONS of options, and food booths nearly everywhere. There were vegan options, dumplings, pizza, salads, and tacos; pretty much anything you could think of. And everything was delicious!
Contiki: Located next to Flash Camp, we had access to a small breakfast/coffee food truck everyday. We had certificates, which entitled us to free coffee/tea and breakfast each morning. The plus side was that it was free. The downside was that they would get backed up. It would take nearly an hour to get a toastie (basically a grilled egg, ham and cheese for those Americans reading this). My suggestion for Contiki is to give us a voucher to be used on Splendour grounds instead, if possible. I only got one free coffee and breakfast out of the three coupons because I didn’t want to wait that long.
Things To Do
There were tons of cool things to do besides check out the acts at the main stages. Some cool things you could do at Splendour include:
- Shopping (I saw some of the coolest and trendiest boutiques ever. There were tons of incredible vendors there. I even bought this amazing dress while shopping!)
- Enjoy a glass of champagne at the XXX bar, located on top a hill on the grounds
- Take your kids to Little Splendour to see some cool Circus performances, practice yoga or dance
- Get a free Biore facial (Which was pretty incredible.)
- Get a blowout and hairstyle at Rogue beauty spa. And if you got a hair service, they would even paint your nails for free! (This was awesome too!)
- Check out the Captain Morgan ship or the Smirnoff Bar, which were large structures that were closed off to the 21+ crowd. Sometimes it was nice to change scenery
- Participate in a craft. There were crafts running daily to make charms, totes, bedazzle your tent, etc.
- Take a bus off the North Byron Parklands and go into Byron town
Contiki: See Meg Mac play a live, exclusive performance, just for YOU!
What makes the festival different?
There were a lot of really cool things about this festival. What I loved most (and I honestly cannot stress this enough) was the fashion there. Aside from that, there were a lot of cool things about this festival that made it unique.
- THE MUD. This year, the mud was completely out of control. So much, that the ENTIRE CITY OF BYRON BAY ran out of gum boots (wellies, rain boots). People were stealing other peoples shoes outside of their tents, and some people were just giving into the mud and walking around barefoot. Shoes were lost in the mud, phones were lost in the mud, and I can’t even imagine what else that the thick, black, heavy substance sucked up over the weekend. It made it a pain, but it also made it fun. Splendour in the Grass was actually Spendour in the Mud this year.
- The shopping. Because this is apparently the ultimate fashion festival, the shopping here was pretty amazing. So many small stores had awesome booths, complete with anything you needed for a fab outfit at the festival or in the real world. I definitely did some browsing and ended up with one of my favorite dresses of all time.
- Alcohol sponsored bars. Everyone knows theres a ton of money in alcohol, and many of them choose to sponsor festivals to have the exclusive rights to vodka, rum, etc. sales. At Splendour, they took it a step further by creating sponsored structures.
- Byron Bay town. Honestly, there is just something so magical about this town that you have to be there to truly understand the energy. Small shops, restaurants, and a gorgeous beach make up this little heaven.
Contiki
Honestly, part of what made my experience at Splendour so enjoyable was having booked through Contiki. Contiki made everything easy for me. All I had to do was book my flight and show up.
- My bus from Brisbane to Byron was booked
- My tent was pitched and it was steps from the festival entrance
- I had a way to charge my phone and GoPro every day
- Contiki leaders were funny, friendly, and informative
- Breakfasts were covered
- I had instant friends
- I had a communal area to lounge in and listen to music when I didn’t want to be in my tent and didn’t want to be in festival grounds
- My bus ride from Byron back to Brisbane was covered
When you breakdown all the costs that are associated with Splendour, going through Contiki probably saved me money and added a lot of convenience. I highly recommend going through them if you’re interested in attending the festival.

Overall Rating : 8.5/10
Splendour in the Grass was just an overall awesome festival. It was family friendly, there was a ton of things to do aside from watch music, the food selection was great, the shopping was the best I had ever scene and the crowd was a blast. Add in a killer lineup with some great options for camping, and you’ve got one heck of a festival. I would recommend this festival to anyone; it was in my top 3 worldwide for the summer.
Note: One thing that I found interesting at this festival was how strict security was. They were incredibly strict when it came to alcohol entering the grounds (NO alcohol was allowed ANYWHERE on North Byron Parklands). The festival went as far as to have police (complete with dogs) all three days at the main festival entrance.
Thanks for reading! Can’t wait to be back in Australia later this year.

My blog has a lot of completely unique content I’ve either authored myself or outsourced but it appears a lot of it is popping it up all over the internet without my permission. Do you know any techniques to help prevent content from being stolen? I’d definitely appreciate it.|

May 25, 2016 at 11:16 pmHello Web Admin, I noticed that your On-Page SEO is is missing a few factors, for one you do not use all three H tags in your post, also I notice that you are not using bold or italics properly in your SEO optimization. On-Page SEO means more now than ever since the new Google update: Panda. No longer are backlinks and simply pinging or sending out a RSS feed the key to getting Google PageRank or Alexa Rankings, You now NEED On-Page SEO. So what is good On-Page SEO?First your keyword must appear in the title. Then it must appear in the URL.You have to optimize your keyword and make sure that it has a nice keyword density of 3-5% in your article with relevant LSI (Latent Semantic Indexing). Then you should spread all H1,H2,H3 tags in your article.Your Keyword should appear in your first paragraph and in the last sentence of the page. You should have relevant usage of Bold and italics of your keyword. There should be one internal link to a page on your blog and you should have one image with an alt tag that has your keyword….wait there’s even more Now what if i told you there was a simple WordPress plugin that does all the On-Page SEO, and automatically for you? That’s right AUTOMATICALLY, just watch this 4minute video for more information at. Seo Plugin
